Dental decay is the most common form of disease known to mankind. It is a known fact that any food that contains carbohydrates, when left in contact with teeth for a prolonged period of time, can cause cavities. The normal micro organisms present in the mouth produce acid through fermentation of the carbohydrate. Unfortunately, we see this happen often. As a practicing dentist, I routinely advise my patients to maintain a healthy diet to prevent such problems.

It is important to remember that altering the diet alone cannot guarantee good oral health. But diet does make a difference when it comes to oral health.

The Dos and Don’ts

Food that contains too much sugar, like candy, leads to acid formation. That, in turn, causes cavities. Repeated exposure to such food can be just as bad as prolonged exposure. Sticky food, chips and taffy, can stay stuck to the teeth and be equally bad. The need for brushing teeth after every meal cannot be emphasized enough. Have children brush their teeth right away after they have candy. Flossing on a daily basis provides extra protection for the hard-to-reach surfaces.

Frequent snacking between meals should be avoided. Diets that contain too much acid can cause damage to the tooth structure. Even healthy foods, like milk and orange juice, contain a lot of acid. Soda or any other carbonated drink can be caustic. Also, when combined with the water in the saliva, these carbonated drinks produce carbonic acid. Both forms can cause chemical erosion and a breach in the enamel layer of teeth.

How to Combat Acid

Don’t let any of the acidic food to stay in your mouth for long. Rinse out your mouth immediately. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to neutralize any acid that might be produced in the mouth. Remember, there is no significant difference between the harmful effects of regular soda and diet soda. The difference between the two is only in the amount of calories and not in the degree of damage to the teeth.

Hard food

If you chew a lot of hard foods, like pretzels or ice, you may develop symptoms consistent with teeth grinding. Chewing too hard may also crack the teeth.Fillings and other restorations can become loose because of the constant flexure of the tooth structure. Eat hard food in moderation.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extremely hot or cold food should be avoided. Both metal and resin fillings expand and contract with extreme changes in temperature. As a result the teeth may crack and the fillings may leak.

Do not eat ice cream and then rinse out your mouth with hot water. Even water at room temperature might not be ideal in this situation. Use cold water to rinse out your mouth and allow the teeth to shift to the body temperature gradually. Sudden changes in the temperature produce minute fracture lines in the teeth. Similarly, do not rinse out your mouth with cold water after drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee. Use warm water to do so.

During Pregnancy

A mother’s intake of calcium is crucial to ensure strong bones and teeth in the fetus.

During Childhood

It is necessary to have adequate amounts of calcium in children’s diet. However, a parent’s responsibility does not end there. In terms of improving dental health, a comprehensive approach has to be taken. On top of ensuring good oral hygiene and adequate diet, children have to be encouraged to brush their teeth after every meal.

Changing the Outlook

I would like to mention that we should not be focused on dental health as an isolated entity. We should start thinking about how dietary habits can affect oral health and most importantly, overall health. Some behaviors that are bad for the body also negatively affect oral health. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to oral cancer and liver failure. Smoking can lead to periodontal disease, oral cancer and lung cancer. Eating too much junk food not only increases the risk of cavities, there is likelihood of obesity, diabetes and cardiac problems. Untreated eating disorders can lead to dental problems like chemical erosion of teeth. Skipping meals also result in increased acidity, and therefore, chemical erosion of teeth and Halitosis.

Mouth and dental hygiene are vital for more than just your teeth. Indeed your total health is a reflection of how well you look after yourself orally.

Using a toothbrush frequently and with good technique is a start and one which challenges many people in itself. For those who have accomplished a steady and adequate brushing technique, there is another step.

To get really clean between your teeth – those places where you just know you haven’t cleaned everything properly – you must use a dental floss technique to make sure that you are fully protected.

Dental floss will remove food particles lodged in between your teeth in those areas that, for one reason or another are just inaccessible to your brush. It may not be your fault, more a layout error at design stage in your mouth! Still, it’s no excuse to let your dental health suffer in this way.

After all, you now have a great solution!

Did you know that all the bits of food that get lodged between your teeth, start to rot in only a few hours. This will almost certainly be one of the causes of bad breath, if you suffer from that.

So if you want to enjoy the best of dental health, it’s always best to make sure that you get rid of these food particles as soon as you can after eating. And as we now know, just brushing on it’s own, simply cannot get to all the hard-to-reach (bits of stuck food rich) places, which is precisely where plaque builds up.

And that’s where a good dental floss can help you.

There are quite a lot of different sorts of dental floss now on the market, each of them, according to their manufacturers, providing you with the perfect solution to meet and exceed your dental health needs

“With it’s light wax coating and it’s shred-resistant texture, it slides easily between your teeth and below the gumline”, is one manufacturer’s claim for it’s number one dental floss.

Whatever product, within whatever brand you choose, the technique is the same. Here it is, step by step:-

1) Take a big enough piece of floss to wrap around a finger on each hand, which keeps it tight

2) Manipulate the floss down through the gaps between each pair of teeth and letting one of the fingers slip, pull the floss all the way through

3) Avoid, where possible, pulling the floss back up from between the teeth as this can damage any dental work you may have had done – pull through the gap horizontally, rather than upwards

4) Some teeth gaps, especially at the back of the mouth, might be quite difficult to get at and this is where your dental health can slip. So do your best and if you really can’t reach, there are some specialized products that come with a ready stretched piece of floss on an implement, which will really help you.

5) Deal with every gap, every time you floss if you want the best dental health

6) After you floss, brush your teeth in the way your dentist or oral hygienist has advised

7) Ideally, floss twice a day, when you brush (you do brush twice a day – right?)

What sort of dental floss to buy? Well, to benefit your overall dental health, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that you need to buy something that you are comfortable enough with that you will use it regularly.

Some dental floss shreds a bit, so some people prefer a more plastic tape type. For others, they will enjoy using a floss with a flavor, so mint versions are available.

Whichever dental floss type you use, get one you like, even if it is a bit more expensive than the budget brand. Then you will not only enjoy using it regularly, but you will also benefit your own dental health every day.

People today care more about their teeth and image than they did few decades ago. With wide television coverage nowadays on cosmetic dentistry, having a good-looking smile has become even more important. Dental insurance plan is a good way to reduce the impact of dental treatment especially for large families. Almost 55% of Americans are covered by dental plans.

Insurance plan for dental treatments is coverage for individuals to protect them against the high cost of dental treatments, and is usually included in health insurance. For this plan the individual has to pay a monthly premium to the insurance company. The insurance company then provides the cost of medicines and treatment procedures to the individual for a specified period. Usually the period is limited to one year. The insurance has to be renewed after the period. The premium set by the company usually increases year by year. For sicker and older individuals the premium is higher than for healthier individuals, which has been a cause of controversy and debate in the western world. The premiums range from 15$ a month to 70$ a month depending upon the type of insurance plan taken and the health of the individual.

Dental insurance plan usually involves a lot of health records, age records, screening and paper work. The insurance company tries to avoid adverse selection. Adverse selection means people with poor dental health who are more likely to opt for dental insurance plans than healthier people. This increases the insurance cost to the insurance company. Most individual dental insurance plans require a waiting period before having any major or minor restorative work done. However there are annual limits to the cost of treatment that one individual can claim under dental ainsurance plans.

When the employer provides employer dental insurance plan then it works out better than discount dental plans opted by individuals. However the trend of employers providing insurance plans is on the decrease.

Dental insurance plans help improve the dental health of individuals as they are paying premiums and hence opt for dental treatment. Employer dental insurance plan is more common and less costly than the individual insurance plan.

The Easy Way To Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Clean- ( Here is a step-by-step, super easy plan – only $7 )

Dog dental health – what, you say, another thing we have to take care of with our dogs? Yes, it is, and it’s not just another priority designed to separate you from your hard-earned cash. Your dog’s dental health is the number one health issue he will face – and it is also sadly true that it is the most under-treated health issue in dogs.

Why is this so important? Well, dogs in the wild don’t have issues with dental health because they are constantly chewing the bones of their prey. That regular chewing cleans their teeth enough to keep them from having problems with tartar and plaque. Our dog’s don’t normally get this – soft foods, table scraps, etc. combine with bacteria and saliva to form plaque within 72 hours! Left along, the plaque turns to tartar, forming a rich bed for bacteria and even more plaque to form. This causes halitosis (bad breath), excessive drooling, red gums (gingivitis) – and ultimately infection and tooth loss and decay.

And the fact is that dog dentistry is expensive – cleaning costs can be several hundred dollars, due to the anesthetic used. So the cheapest and best route to good dog dental health is good regular hygiene. Regular brushing, preferably each day. Too much trouble, you say? What would your teeth look and smell like if you never brushed them? Doesn’t your dog deserve basic care?

Many think that just giving bones and rawhide treats is enough – but your dog needs 30 minutes of solid chewing per day to make this strategy effective. Most dog’s don’t get that – and brushing is the most effective alternative. But take heart – dogs actually love to have their teeth brushed once they have been accustomed to it. You have to get a plan and introduce brushing slowly and step-by-step. Once your dog gets used to it, he’ll love it, I promise!

Here is how to do it - (Click here for a easy to follow plan – only $7 )

One thing to remember: don’t use human toothpaste! It can make your dog sick and foams up way too much, causing more distress during brushing. There are flavored dog toothpastes on the market that they will love – and look forward to. If you have a large dog, get one of the long-handled tooth brushes, otherwise any soft-bristled brush will do a good job.

After several weeks of slowly getting your dog accustomed to this procedure – it will be a great thing for your dog. Dental health will just become part of his daily routine, like eating and grooming. You will form a stronger bond with your dog, and he will be healthier and happier. He will also live longer – without the dangers of living with the symptoms of poor dental care – gingivitis, infection and tooth loss.

Ask yourself this: what excuse will you give when your dog develops dental disease? It’s time to step up and join the ranks of responsible dog owners who care for their dog’s dental health.

Creating a beautiful smile, beaming almost from ear to ear, has become an accepted rite of passage for teenagers these days, as common as SATs and their first date.

In fact dental braces are now so common that kids rarely get teased about wearing them and it’s seem as something that ‘just is’, during the teenage years.

To make sure that you get the outcomes that you want with your dental braces, you have ongoing maintenance and care of them to understand carefully.

Are Invisible Braces The Answer?

Although the new style of Invisalign braces are much less intrusive type of dental brace, it would not be true to say that they are the answer to all problems.

They are less annoying in their almost invisibility, yet they still need to be taken care of when used, with cleaning, care with food and other issues a problem.

The ADA (American Dental Association) do not believe that this design of dental brace is suitable for all problems. Indeed they do not recommend they are used for children and when they are used, the best use is for minor work, typically where normal dental braces would not necessarily be used.

A good invention, Invisalign braces fill a niche in the dental braces market, but only a small one, especially where the adult wearer already has a good bite pattern and the issues are minor.

So, traditional dental braces are still the product of choice for most children and adults, whether they have a short or long term problem with their teeth and mouth.

Dental Braces and Intimate Relationships

If you are sexually active and wear dental braces, care must be taken especially when French kissing or other relations that involve the mouth.

The metal in the braces could seriously get in the way and where tender parts of the anatomy or condoms are involved, this might make the experience memorable for the wrong reasons.

No-one would like for dental braces to have a lasting impression such as injury, a sexually transmitted disease or even worse an unwanted pregnancy to be the result.

It’s also possible that even a minor injury could lead to oral or other infections that whilst not described as an STD, would still make a mark on your sexual partner.

Ironically, that is pretty much a kiss of death on any relationship and probably best to be avoided where possible.

Dental braces are a part of growing up. They are quite an important part of dental health and many people have passed this way before.

With a few simple precautions they fulfil an important role in managing the appearance of millions of people today, so they are worth the effort.

Despite the discomfort, many years experience has proven that the effort is worth it and a million-dollar smile is within touch for many more people these days than ever before.

This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Renegade Roundtable, which can be found at http:// www.RenegadeRoundtable.com. In this excerpt, Sally Fallon shares on connections between nutrition and dental health and even dental recovery.

Renegade Roundtable with Sally Fallon, nutrition researcher, chef, journalist and author of Nourishing Traditions-The Cookbook That Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and Diet Dictocrats.

Kevin: That’s a neat way to prepare it. Weston Price was a dentist so let’s talk about teeth. And let’s talk about what happens when people’s teeth start to decay. Can you rebuild those and what do you think some of the reasons why their teeth were so good, the cultures who were eating a non-Western diet?

Sally: Well their teeth were normal. I don’t even like to use the word “good”; they’re the way teeth are supposed to be. They were normal. A key nutrient here is vitamin K. Now Dr. Price didn’t know what this vitamin was, he called it activator X, but we have now identified it pretty firmly as vitamin K and we know that people who have a lot of vitamin K in their saliva don’t get cavities. And vitamin K is absolutely necessary for putting calcium in the teeth and bones, calcium and phosphorus. You need vitamin K for that, more than just for healthy blood. We now realize you need vitamin K for healthy teeth and bones.

Where do we find vitamin K? Well we find it in the animal fats of grass fed animals, we find it in liver, and we find it in egg yolks of grass fed chickens. Cheese is an excellent source of vitamin K. And there are a couple surprising sources of vitamin K. One is nato, which is a fermented soy product. Vitamin K is created by a special type of fermentation. So in Asia where they’re not eating butter — by the way butter is a great source of vitamin K — where they’re not eating butter and cheese, they get a lot of vitamin K from this special fermented
soy product that they eat in small amounts.

And that’s why we say…we really qualify our warnings about soy. We warn against the modern soy products but in Asia, in the context of their diet and the way they prepare the soy, it is an extremely important component of the diet, very healthy component.

And just getting back to the tooth decay. Dr. Price had a method for treating tooth decay that worked, that stopped the decay and actually reversed the decay, helped the tooth rebuild. And it was a combination of high vitamin cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil. The butter oil was made by centrifuging butter that came from cows eating rapidly growing green grass and the oil concentrated the X factor, the vitamin K. And when he gave this to people and got them off all the sugar and everything their teeth rebuilt themselves, the re- healed themselves. We’ve had lots of people tell us they’ve done the same thing.

Kevin: Really? How much of the oil?

Sally: Well we’re saying a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon a day. Dr. Price actually administered it in drops under the tongue, alternating drops of the vitamin oil and the cod liver oil. But you know the other thing that he was concerned about was dental deformities. You have to ask yourself why all these children today need braces. Why are their teeth coming in crooked? It’s not genetic, it’s not because they suck their thumbs, it’s not because they eat soft food, it’s because of nutrition. It’s because they don’t have the right building materials to build a large wide palate for the teeth to come in straight. And I actually proved that with my reckless experiment on my children, none of them needed braces so I had a lot more money to spend on good food than spending on the orthodontist. And that’s surprising because I needed braces. So we were able to reverse that trend with the right nutrition.

Kevin: Now my question is, you may or may not know the answer to this, if you have had braces, if you’ve had your wisdom teeth pulled, is there any salvation for you?

Sally: Yes, I’m in that category. I had braces, I have a very narrow face and I had wisdom teeth pulled and I was the allergy kid, I had lots of health problems. I’ve gone on this diet and my allergies have gone away and I have a lot more energy and I haven’t gotten cavities in years and years but my wisdom teeth didn’t grow back. And my palate is narrow. After a certain point you can’t go back. And actually the palate is formed in utero and in the first years of life so that’s when a very nutrient dense diet is so crucial and, in fact, the traditional cultures understood that and fed special foods to men and women before conception and then to the women during pregnancy and to growing children.

Kevin: You mentioned rebuilding teeth. Is that getting rid of cavities that are there? Is it building back enamel?

Sally: Enamel can grow back. We’ve had people with black cavities in their teeth who did what we recommended and the tooth ache goes away and then they say a few weeks later this black piece falls out and the hole is filled. It’s amazing, isn’t it? And you know when Dr. Price first did this, and even today, dentists will tell you can’t heal tooth and yet we’ve seen it done.

Kevin: It doesn’t make any sense because you can heal a bone. So you break a bone, you can heal it, why can’t you heal a tooth?

Sally: Well, of course what the tooth does is kind of fill in whereas the bone re-knits. But yeah, it’s quite amazing.

Kevin: I have a question for you here. Someone asks, “How do you deal with all the confusion about diet?” What’s a way that someone can be at ease when all this information is being put on them, “this is right, this is right, this is wrong, someone just said this is right”…how does someone deal with that?

Sally: I know and it’s quite interesting to me when people first hear about our work there’s a certain percentage that kind of digest it immediately and that’s it, they never look back. And they’re never confused or afraid again. It just all comes together for them. But we have other people who say, “You’re just one opinion,” and so continue to be pulled in different directions on the diet and I do not know what it is that makes the difference in how you accept what we’re putting out there. All I can say is that I would strongly urge someone who’s confused to be a member and get our journal; we have a section of the journal called Caustic Commentary where we talk about all the studies coming out and what’s being said about them and what the studies really show and so forth. It keeps you up- to-date on all of these controversies. So I would recommend reading all that part of our website. We reference everything; so hopefully, if you’re not convinced in your gut immediately, eventually your brain will convince you from just all the information we put before you. I would certainly recommend carefully reading our little dietary guidelines booklet and see if that makes sense to you. It’s all bullet points and numbered points so it’s kind of easy to take in.

Kevin: To start the Weston A. Price Foundation, it must have really hit you pretty hard.

Sally: Yeah. I’d much rather stay home and cook and do leisure activities but Dr. Enig and I, Dr. Enig’s my colleague and co-author, we just looked at each other and said, “Who’s going to do this if we don’t do this?” Somebody had to do it because otherwise we were facing an absolute disaster. And fortunately a small portion of the population has listened to us and has followed the recommendations when they were pregnant and given birth to these beautiful healthy babies. Maybe that’s how I should answer the question that you asked before, go onto our website and look at our babies and if that doesn’t convince you that this is the right way to go then probably nothing will because these babies look so different from the typical modern baby. They have beautiful round faces and good skin, they don’t have circles under their eyes, they are normal in every respect, they talk early, they walk early, they’re just bright sparks. And the letters of thanks and gratitude that we get from the parents, that’s what keeps us going; that’s what helps us work 26 hours a day, day after day.

The majority of the population do not have any kind of Dental Insurance, and Ohio is especially hutring for lack of dental coverage. It’s not uncommon for work places that they lack on providing their employees with dental insurance. Although carrying dental insurance can be hard on the budget, it’s usually more economical than having to pay for it without the benefit of insurance.

Why bother with the hassle of dental insurance paperwork when you can simply use a membership card for each visit. Avoiding the dentist and simply neglecting to do anything about it would be the worst choice you could make. In the end, if you wait too long to take care of that cavity, you will end up with a much more expensive root canal.

Another affordable dental care option is available that many people are beginning to investigate, as should you. It is known as a dental discount plan. While this isn’t dental insurance per se, it does save you plenty at dentist visits, as well as being fast and simple to establish. It is possible to get cheap dental care.

Discount dental plans can be a much better option than dental insurance for a number of reasons:

The majority of companies offering dental insurance cover up to only $1,000 each year, while there are no annual limitations with discount dental plans.

Dental Plans are activated without delay in a couple of days, while dental insurance requires a lengthier waiting period before you may use it.

Dental plans involve just a straightforward membership card to use for each visit while dental insurance involves a great deal of paperwork.

Compared to dental insurance which states many health requirements, dental plans have no health restrictions which is very advantageous.

One advantage a dental plan hasover dental insurance is that it covers things that insurance doesn’t, like braces and teeth whitening.

One of the most important, yet negledted, areas of our health in modern society is oral health. While the total cost of your dental work will not be covered by a discount dental plan, knowing that you can save money on your dental work and get some very good discounts on dental procedures for a monthly fee of just $79 or more, can be very reassuring. There is no cut-off point, instead a fraction of the cost is subtracted for the treatment you receive.

Some dental plans have over 100,000 participating dentists, making it easy to locate a dentist in your area Everyone is looking for discount dental plans because of the increased flexibility and freedom, as well as some cosmetic dental procedures being covered. Dental plans also offer major discounts for those needing braces. If you have a dental plan you can receive inexpensive dental care.

Remeber to take care of your oral health. It is very necessary. Knowing that you spent the money you needed to on keeping your attractive smile rather than giving it all to the dental insurance companies will, in time, make you want to smile even more. You can qualify for cheap dental care.

While dental health insurance in Ohio may be hard to find, dental discount plans can be the perfect solution. Ohio residents can simply type in their zip code and find dental plans near them, whether it’s Cincinatti, Canton, or Cleveland, you can find a participating dentist near you.

US Discount Dental Health Plans are an inexpensive dental care alternative instead of buying dental insurance. These discount dental plans never make any payments directly to your dentist or specialist.

The benefit to using these types of discount plans is that they offer substantial discounts, in some cases as high as 60% off, on most routine dental care, such as cleaning, dentures, orthodontic braces and much more.

Here are some of the pro’s and con’s of US discount dental health plans.

Pro’s

One of the good things about these types of plans is they don’t have any age limit restrictions. This means that you can see a qualified participating dental provider no matter how old you are.

Another benefit is that pre-existing conditions are included. Dental insurance policies won’t cover any condition that already existed at the time you were issued the plan. That means that if your whole reason for buying insurance was to get your teeth fixed that you’re in for a rude awakening because it won’t happen. You can get a discount at a participating dentist as soon as you have your discount card in hand.

Although the cost of joining a discount dental plan and getting insurance is close to the same, a discount plan does not require you to pay co-pays each time you visit the dentist. Also, there are no annual limits with discounted plans as there are with most types of insurance.

Cons

If you have a major accident, such as falling off a bicycle, falling out of a tree, falling down and breaking your teeth, etc, then dental insurance would cover most of the costs of fixing your teeth, whereas a discount plan would only offer the discount.

Although there are well over 100,000 providers that accept discount plans in the USA, there are still many areas where service is very limited and you may be forced to travel an hour or more to see a participating dentist.

You may not be able to continue seeing your current dentist, if you have one. You could ask that they become a discount plan provider and then see them, but if they refuse then you’ll have no choice but to find a new dentist within the network of the discount plan.

So are us discount dental health plans a better deal than traditional dental insurance? This depends on your personal needs and the immediate care needs of whoever is going to be included in the plan. It would be best for everyone if they could carry both plans, but that’s not feasible for everyone to do since there are costs involved. Your best option is to get as much information as possible about these two plans, evaluate your urgent dental care needs and make an informed decision afterword.

Cosmetic dentistry Australia is becoming more and more popular around the world. This is probably because along with enhancing your smile and the way you look, cosmetic dentistry also helps you improve your dental health directly as well as indirectly.

Originally the purpose of dentistry was to maintain and improve oral hygiene by taking care of germ and decay that attach the teeth and by cleaning the teeth regularly. Often teeth would have to be removed if they were too badly damaged.

With cosmetic dentistry Cremorne City NSW one can maintain the health without spoiling the appearance of your teeth. Cavities need not be ugly metal fillings anymore. With cosmetic dentistry, the fillings match the tooth exactly. Cosmetic dentistry Cremorne City NSW helps you deal with cracking, breaking or chipped teeth before they become infected and fall out. You can choose between crowns, bridges, veneers or even implants. In case of stained or yellow teeth which may be due to smoking, caffeine stains or even trauma, cosmetic dentistry offers teeth whitening to return the dazzling smile.

Cosmetic dentistry North Sydney even allows you to change the shape of your teeth and your smile without the pain of braces. Gaps between teeth or due to missing teeth can be filled in with the help of veneers or dental implants giving you a complete and beautiful smile. With cosmetic dentistry Chatswood it is easy to maintain hygiene as regular brushing and flossing is required and not any fancy gadgets.
